A note from the founder: Tessa Denison
Rosie my daughter has Down’s Syndrome. She is now 23 and wants to go out, like any young teenager, socialise and make new friends, but it’s not that easy. Her vulnerability means she needs additional help and to be in a safe environment so life can be very frustrating for her and other young adults with learning disabilities. When most 18 year olds become adults for our young adults life is very different. Why can’t our young adults have age appropriate social events? Club nights, visit the pub, social activities, a night out with their mates, go to the theatre or a concert.
That’s why we formed THINK18!
Tessa recognised the particular difficulties young people with learning disabilities face in the transition to adulthood. These challenges include safe socialising, relationships and staying healthy. There has been a particular emphasis on physical activities as many of our young people need to stay healthy and exercise helps promote their wellbeing.
The charity has been running since 2019 and is growing fast; as of Dec 2024 we have over 100 members.
Our weekly Saturday mornings at The Appledram are attended by up to 36 young adults.We also offer theatre trips, camping trips and weekly Thursday evening socials allowing our members to meet up safely and enjoy themselves.
As Enable My Trip is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation we rely solely on donations and fund raising to keep our services truly free for users and providers. We are not a travel agent or trip organiser; You will need to contact the provider(s) directly to make reservations.
